CZA Cino Zucchi Architetti, one of the leading European studios in the fields of architecture, landscape and urban design, is constantly searching new spatial solutions in the diverse and layered character of contemporary human territories.

Its goal is to combine innovation and research with a professional completeness, capable of responding to complex programs at any scale; employing its articulated expertise and, when needed, a well-established net of specialised consultants (structural and mechanical engineering, traffic, economics, landscape design, graphics, light design).

Studio Folder coordinated the whole process behind the design of the website, from art direction to web design and development. The art direction has been a crucial step into the project: CZA’s use of textures in its architecture was the cornerstone around which the photography choices were made, and the vector patterns used as backgrounds were created as a connecting link throughout the website.

In 2016 the V&A launched its first collaboration with the Venice Biennale, in the Applied Arts Pavilion located in the Arsenale. The exhibition, ‘A World of Fragile Parts’ curated by Brendan Cormier, explores the possibilities of preserving and disseminating cultural artefacts. It showcases a selection of projects that demonstrate the latest replication technologies, posing political questions about the copy.

Appropriation, storytelling, reenactment, and reportage are some of the strategies that Mario García Torres deploys to highlight the limitations of factual evidence and the agency of historical records and objects. An Arrival Tale detaches the Mexican artist’s works in the TBA21 collection from their original contexts and offers them as a collection of narratives and artistic experiments open for reinscription in order to address the conditions and urgencies of our contemporary societies. It examines the space of arrival as a complicated and disjointed nexus between departure, displacement, and return.

The publication follows the eponymous exhibition at TBA21 – Augarten. While conceived in relation to the exhibition, this book is not a documentation, but rather the start of a journey that expands, explores, complicates, and undoes the thematic threads of spatial disjunction, recollection, asynchronicity, fictionality, and the politics of visibility.

Studio Folder designed the visuals for the exhibition at TBA21 and the publication An Arrival Tale published by Sternberg Press. You can find the exhibition guide here

By looking at imagery metadata, interviews, meeting minutes of space treaties, and technological failures, Uncharted is an ongoing research inquiry into the rhetoric of the contemporary globe—and by what mechanisms it came to be.

Cartographic representation and geographic databases are used every day by millions of people to move across familiar environments, plan long-range trips, cross national borders, reach shores of unknown countries in hope of a better life, or scan oceanic seabeds for untapped resources. Once directly connected to a physical activity on the territory—often accomplished through a coordinated parade of military and state presence—, Earth surveying is now the result of the remote observation by a vast array of orbiting sensors.

Disconnected from the fate of our surroundings (and bound to an almost-eternal life out of the harsh conditions that constantly reshape the same ground they monitor), the global remote sensing apparatus is made of objects, facilities, and data owned by nation states and private corporations, and managed through an intricate network of ground stations. It conceals its different agendas under the smooth, colour-corrected surface of satellite imagery, embedded in the metadata of the global digital mosaic like a footnote to the wonders of the contemporary geographic omniscience—while delivering a profitable picture of a borderless world. On the screen where the geographic information is delivered and experienced, all that counts is a smooth navigation experience: we can go everywhere—and we belong anywhere—on the evenly accessible surface criss-crossed by GPS-calculated paths, where political and natural features are erased under the uniform roaming of a positioning dot.

Uncharted aims to map this secretive territory, in order to unfold the complexity behind the technologies and systems that are shaping the way in which we see and experience our world. The first outcome of this investigation is an interactive installation and a series of experimental visualisations produced for After Belonging, Oslo Architecture Triennale 2016. The infrastructure behind contemporary cartography has been enquired in three phases and correspondent case studies: Sensing, by visualising Landsat programme’s operations between 1972 and 2016; Processing, by looking at Svalbard Satellite Station and various features of satellite imagery at extreme latitudes; Rendering, by cutting a vertical section of Google Maps’ digital sky.

Italian Limes is an ongoing research project and an interactive installation that explores the most remote Alpine regions, where national borders drift due to global warming and shrinking glaciers.

Italian Limes (where limes is the Latin word for ’borders’) is a project initiated and curated by Folder, originally commissioned as part of Fundamentals, the 14th International Architecture Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia, where it was awarded with a special mention by the International jury. The project focuses on the effects of climate change on shrinking glaciers and the consequent shifts of the watershed that defines the national borders of Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France. Investigating the fragile balance of the Alpine ecosystem, Italian Limes shows how natural frontiers are subject to the complexity of continuous ecological processes, depending on the technologies and norms we use to represent it.

Invited to be part of the new exhibition Reset Modernity!, curated by the philosopher Bruno Latour in collaboration with AIME Team, the designers behind Italian Limes planned a new phase of the project, along with a new expedition on the glaciers of the Ötztal Alps, after the initial survey conducted in 2014.

On April 2nd, 2016 the Italian Limes team successfully installed a series of autonomous devices on the melting ice sheet at the foot of Mt. Similaun, 3,300m above sea level. The new measurement units will help to track the change in the tridimensional geometry of the glacier throughout Spring and Summer 2016.

The expedition was undertaken with representatives from the Comitato Glaciologico Italiano, the OGS—National Institute of Oceanography and of Experimental Geophysics, and the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences of the University of Parma, who provided scientific coordination for the project. Further data was collected on the site during the expedition, and a geophysical survey of the glacier was performed. Along with providing the source of data for the installation at ZKM, Karlsruhe, that opened on April 16th, these measures will help to better understand climate change dynamics on the Alps.

Well-designed architecture and objects always show a meaningful resonance between means and ends. Their generating process is not a neutral vehicle that leads from the idea to the result, but rather a meeting of form and material, which may take the mode of a free experiment or confirm well-tested crafting practices.

Within a varied contemporary panorama, the exhibition displays a selection of ‘design events’ of different kinds and of different scales, organised into eight possible actions; eight metamorphoses capable of transforming materials or components into ‘artefacts’, into active elements of our daily lives and culture.

The four categories formulated a hundred and fifty years ago by Gottfried Semper, and doubled in number to bring them up to date with contemporary conditions, are used as a grid to organise the complex structure of the artificial environment; and as the instrument for a possible revision of the axioms and methods of ‘modern design’, in its constant attempt to adapt them to the problems and aspirations of a complex world.

Sempering looks at architecture, landscapes and objects of the last decade crossing the established boundaries of every possible system of the arts, of every division in skills and sectors. Actions such as stacking heavy materials, connecting light structures, moulding soft materials, engraving fine casings, folding tin sheets, weaving threads, arranging tiles or blowing air can be seen as basic actions capable of inventing unexpected forms by the use of new technologies, but also as the testing of well-established ‘customs’ or formal traditions in their response to new conditions.
